Dear Volunteer,
Thank you
for your interest in helping the children of Kolkata (Calcutta). Kolkata
is a very poor city, and
the need is so great. Below please find answers to the most frequently
asked questions about our volunteer program.
Responsibilities
I oversee a variety of educational and lunch programs for street
(homeless) children, children living in slums, and mentally and
physically challenged young adults. I welcome volunteers to work
alongside me, assisting the children as they learn. It is very
gratifying work!
Stay One Day or As Long As You Like
Volunteers
may come for as long as they wish, with no minimum number
of days. Each day that you spend with the children is valuable. It
would be very helpful if you could bring one box of humanitarian aid
with you. This would be sent to your home from our headquarters in
New Jersey, USA before you leave. (See Contact
Information)
Travel/Accommodations/Expenses
Please
consult a travel agent about travel arrangements and a doctor about
vaccinations. You can stay in a small guest house that costs about
$10.00/ night for a non-AC room with a bath. An air conditioned room costs about $20.00. On average, you'll spend about
$2.00 for each meal. Also, there are dormitories in the Salvation Army
that are cheaper. Volunteers must assume all of the costs since ETC's
limited resources are used for the programs.
Travel Visa
Most
importantly, when you apply for a visa, apply for a "TOURIST" visa
because the Indian government restricts the number of volunteer visas.
Weather
It
is very hot in Kolkata from March through September. In addition, the
rainy season begins in July and ends in September. Bring clothing that
is light-weight and loose-fitting.(Please, no shorts or tank tops.)
During the winter it may get cold, requiring a light jacket or sweater.
Free Time
The
volunteer responsibilities do not require a full day. There is sufficient
free time for shopping and sightseeing in the city.
I leave Kolkata at the beginning of April and return in August. Therefore, there are no volunteer opportunities during that
period of time. Please let me know when you wish to come and I will
make every effort to help you.
If you have
any other questions, feel free to e-mail me at
giffoniello@hotmail.com.
Looking forward to meeting you.
